JotSpot - The Application Wiki Review

JotSpot is, at it's heart, a Wiki. It's one of a few that are not available for download, but managed on their servers at jot.com. I set up a JotSpot wiki to collaborate with the content editor and reviewer for SilverfishLongboarding.com (a hobby site of mine). So far, it's been an excellent choice. Setup took about 2 minutes--just long enough to type the name of the new wiki and check my email. From there, we were immediately able to create content at the new domain (silverfish.jot.com).

Adding content is simple. I'm usually not a fan of the WYSIWYG DHTML editors, but JotSpot's is actually really nice. It keeps it's formatting well and is quick to get the hang of. If you don't like it though, you can create content using HTML or Wiki syntax.

Some nice features that JotSpot offers that are not found on all wiki's are:

• Email content to a page
• Intuitive attachments
• Comments on a page
• Scriptable to add custom functionality (!)

The biggest, and most interesting feature, is the ability to add and create custom applications. Some that are prebuilt and available to add to your wiki are:

• ToDo Lists
• Project Management
• Bug tracking
• CRM
• Forums and blogs
• Polls

Along with many others. They are simple to add and use, making JotSpot much more than just a wiki and much nicer than most Groupware I've tried.

Pricing is fair--50 pages and 5 users are free, with additional plans starting at $9 a month. Right now we're still only using about 20 pages with 3 users and getting great use out of the site. Even the free plan allows you to add applications.

JotSpot is stable, but in active development. Features are being added as well as new applications. The developers are accessible and open to suggestions.

My overall verdict is that JotSpot is extremely capable, simple to set up and use and more functional than any other wiki I've used. As a company, JotSpot seems to be in touch with it's users and always looking to improve the experience. They're doing things right. Highly recommended.
